Microplastics Found in Human Hearts

We have previously discovered microplastics in people’s bloodstream, so it’s not much of a surprise that we are now finding microplastics in human hearts for the first time.

Researchers from Capital Medical University, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and Peking Union Medical College used laser and microscopy techniques to examine tissue samples from 15 patients undergoing heart surgery. The results showed that nine different types of microplastics were found in the heart tissue and blood samples of the patients. The largest plastic particle had a diameter of 469 micrometers. The study suggests that microplastics can spread throughout the body and impact health.

This discovery echoes previous research that has shown the presence of microplastics in human feces, lungs, and even placenta.
